La Financière de l’Echiquier supports WHO in promoting tobacco control measures

La Financière de l’Echiquier (LFDE) is supporting actions by the World Health Organization (WHO) on tobacco control. This engagement is defined in the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) of which LFDE has been a signatory since 2008.

Announced in conjunction with World No Tobacco Day, a statement signed by a coalition of 53 global investors – with six from France – representing US$3.8 trillion in assets under management, confirmed the finance industry’s commitment to supporting and encouraging government efforts to reduce the impact of tobacco use on companies and the environment. At the initiative of AXA, CalPERS, SCOR and AMP Capital, the purpose of this first international statement is to contribute to this major global public health issue.

One billion people will die from the effects of tobacco during the 21e century according to WHO and the estimated social, economic and environmental costs of tobacco-related diseases is more than one trillion per year.

“A trailblazer in SRI in France, LFDE had excluded tobacco from the scope of its investments since its very creation in the 1991. Its commitment in favour of responsible finance is reflected by the continuing development over a period of more than 10 years of a demanding SRI approach reconciling performance and responsibility”, commented Didier Le Menestrel, Chairman-CEO of La Financière de l’Echiquier.
